Snake makes his way to Volgin’s Cobra base to extract Sokolov and escort him back to America. The opening chapter of this story is called the Virtuous Mission, which has Naked Snake sent into a Russian jungle to extract a soviet scientist called Sokolov, who has been helping Colonel Volgin to develop the first iteration of a Metal Gear, known as the Shagohod. Revolver Ocelot - An American member of the Cobra Unit who will have an ongoing relationship with Snake throughout the game series. Major Zero - Leader of the CIA’s FOX Unit and another disciple of The Boss, Zero one of the main people Snake speaks to during his mission via Codec.Įva - An ex-NSA agent who defected from the US a few years ago, and whose allegiance is perpetually unclear.Ĭolonel Volgin - The Russian commander of the Cobra Unit, a Soviet counterpart to FOX which has soldiers with special abilities. She has been a very important role model by this point. The Boss - A female soldier who taught Snake everything he knows, including his code of ethics. At this time he is a secret agent working for the CIA. Naked Snake - This is the codename Big Boss uses at the beginning of the story. Several of them will appear throughout the series so it’s useful to have a quick reference at hand. The first thing to do with each of these games is briefly introduce the main players in the large cast. The second half is all about his (sort of) son, who is unaware of his own lineage at the start of the story but later comes to right his (sort of) father’s wrongs and redeem the good name of… Snake. There are some parallels to be drawn with the Star Wars movies, as the first games in the timeline are about the corruption and eventual fall of the hero. The series splits its focus between Solid Snake the hero of the first few games, and Naked Snake the original soldierfrom which Solid was cloned. The series has 10 main entries that jump around a massive and complicated timeline, so I wanted to break it down in a way that’s easy to digest for anyone who needs a reminder or is new to the series. When it's not too deriviative, it's a rather endearing sign of Hideo Kojima's love for the medium, and that unabashed willingness to share one's ideas and interests with the world is perhaps what makes the Metal Gear series resonate with so many.With the recent release of The Phantom Pain I thought it would be useful to do a recap of the Metal Gear Solid storyline. Thirty-four years ago, it started as a pastiche of western action movies, and throughout its run, its characters have unapologetically taken several cues from Hollywood's biggest film heroes. The Metal Gear series has certainly run an interesting course. ![]() However, considering the uptick in established actors getting involved in video games nowadays, one has to wonder if Russell might accept the role were he offered it today. As good of an actor as Russell is, it's hard to imagine MGS3 without the cool, raspy tones of David Hayter as Big Boss. During Metal Gear Solid 3's development, Kojima allegedly asked Kurt Russell to voice Big Boss, but the famous actor reportedly turned the role down. Given the character's lean, albeit athletic physique, strong jawline, and distinct facial features, it's fair to say that Snake does, in some regards, bear a resemblance to each actor.īeyond simply looking like Pliskenn - eyepatch, mullet and all - Kojima had planned for Big Boss to sound like him, too. Shinkawa has previously stated that Snake was designed to be more or less a combination of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Christopher Walken, boasting the body of the former and the face of the latter. The definitive look of Solid Snake would start to take form with Metal Gear Solid, when Yoji Shinkawa took over art for the series. It also wouldn't be a shock if the actor's controversial statements and actions since Metal Gear 2's release convinced Konami to abandon his likeness. In the game's original MSX release, Snake's in-game codec portrait looked just like Gibson, but later editions of Metal Gear 2 would revise Snake's portrait to match his appearance in Metal Gear Solid for the sake of continuity. Rather, he took on the one of Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, and Braveheart star, Mel Gibson. As such, when Metal Gear 2 rolled around, Snake did not retain the likeness of Biehn.
